Duplex Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

In the past, varicose veins not visible on the surface of the skin had to be treated using invasive surgical procedures. Today, invasive options are no longer necessary in most cases, thanks to ultrasound technology that allows for location and treatment of even veins deep within the leg. Duplex ultrasound is used to both locate the diseased vein and guide a needle directly into the vein, allowing for treatment without incisions, sutures or recovery time afterward.

Candidates for Duplex Ultrasound Guided Therapy

Dr. Presant uses duplex ultrasound guided therapy to both diagnose and treat vein conditions. The procedure may be recommended when diseased veins are suspected, but not visible on the skin’s surface. The procedure may also be advised for the purpose of diagnosing an underlying venous condition when visible varicose or spider veins are present.

About the Procedure

Ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to locate and diagnose a variety of conditions. When used during treatment, ultrasound locates the specific vein requiring treatment and assists the physician in guiding the needle directly into the vein. Once the needle is in place, a sclerosing agent or laser energy can be delivered into the vein, causing the affected vein to seal shut. Blood can then reroute through healthy veins nearby.

Short Recovery Time

The greatest benefit of ultrasound guided therapy is it allows for treatment of deeper veins without the need for surgery or any recovery time afterward. Most patients are able to return to regular activities immediately following treatments. Discomfort is minimal, with most patients requiring no pain medication after the procedure.
